WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING

PROPER PROCESSING OF WASTE AND SEWAGE SLUDGE:
TURNING A LIABILITY INTO AN ASSET

Modern society produces huge quantities of waste and people pay good money to have it removed. Drying these waste (or similar) products can reduce the cost of removal by up to 80%. Plus, waste and sewage often actually contain valuable raw materials that can be recycled. Waste products can even be used as an alternative fuel in many industries now. In each case, the first step in creating value from these waste products is to dry them.

Paper and Pulp Industry

Solutions for Both Ends of the Production Process

Alongside high-quality products, the paper and pulp industry produces high quantities of waste, such as paper sludge, paper sewage sludge, as well as coarse and regular reject in paper recycling. These waste products are high in calories so they make a great alternative fuel. Or they can be processed to make absorbent industrial products. NEWeco-tec has the right dryers for all segments of the paper industry: a solution for what to do with the tons of waste or similar produced in way that makes sense and makes money.

Drying Pulp

Cellulose plant fibers are the key ingredient in paper production but they can also be used in other areas. Specific drying systems are used in paper production, and a Container-Band-Trockner may be the right solution to convert pulp for other uses.

Paper and Cardboard Production

Paper sludge created in the manufacturing of paper and cardboard can be used as fuel once dried. So can the sewage sludge from the industry’s sewage treatment plants. Plus, sludge disposal is always cheaper if it has been pre-treated. Transportation and disposal companies’ costs are significantly lower for dry mass or granulate than for heavy, wet sludge.

Making Recycled Paper

To make recycled paper, the paper fibers from different materials must first be separated. In each phase of separation, the materials removed—reject, coarse waste, oversize material from filtration, coarse reject—are ideal alternative fuels when dried.

Cement Industry

Waste as an Alternative Energy Source

Drying systems help one of the most energy-intensive industries to use alternative fuels. NEWeco-tec has the ideally designed belt dryer for drying RDF (refuse derived fuel) and SSW (solid shredded waste). Dried paper sludge, sewage and dairy sludge, regular and coarse reject, as well as oversize material from filtration, can all be used as energy sources in the cement industry. With the right raw-material processing, drying systems can really help to curb CO2 emissions.

Water Costs – So Take it Out!

In the waste disposal industry, storing waste dry is a decisive factor in financial success. Properly dried waste is lighter, it burns (better) and valuable resources can be separated from the rest. Removing water reduces the volume of waste, reducing the cost of transportation and disposal. Every process in the waste disposal industry has its own challenges. And NEWeco-tec has the right belt dryer for all of them.

Waste Disposal

Removing moisture from the waste reduces the volume and weight. This reduces the transportation and final disposal costs – which are calculated according to weight.

Thermal Recovery

This process can be used for municipal household waste or similar commercial waste. It destroys organic pollutants and traps inorganic pollutants in the filter particles and reduces waste volume by 90%. The heat resulting from thermal waste disposal can be used for district heating systems or to generate electricity. The bottom ash created by the process can be used to build roads or earthworks, for example. Before this thermal process, moisture must be removed from the waste so that it can actually burn. The drying system uses the waste heat from the burning—a clever and sustainable concept.

Recycling

In order to retrieve recyclable components from the waste, the waste or waste fraction must usually be dried. The dryer the material, the more selective separation can be. This way, the waste can be processed based on the texture of the intake and the desired material. Only drying the waste makes it possible to retrieve the resources inside.

Sewage Processing

Retrieving Raw Materials and Resources from Sewage Sludge

Sewage treatment plants turn municipal, commercial and industrial sewage into clean water and sewage sludge. The sludge must be further processed, dumped or burnt. Disposing of the sludge via agriculture is generally illegal and outdated. NEWeco-tec has innovative solutions for drying sewage sludge, as well as upstream and downstream work. Our nifty NEWdelmaker or the versatile NEWwolf form the sludge into the perfect shape and surface for efficient drying. This produces a low-dust, dry granulate—ideal for burning or phosphorous reclamation.

Sewage Treatment Plants and Sewage Works

A complex process extracts sewage sludge from municipal and industrial sewage. This wet, sticky waste product is dumped in landfill or taken for garbage incineration or monofiring. Sewage sludge is a watery solution containing microorganisms that metabolize the nutrients in the sewage. Adding a polymer causes the sludge to set after mechanical dehydration. In this state, it can then be dried and further processed. Mass and volume can reduce by up to 80% in the drying process. Disposal costs thus drop significantly.

Sewage Sludge Pyrolysis

The dried sludge is made primarily from dead microorganisms, i.e. from carbon compounds. Once pyrolyzed, the sludge can be used as a base material in fertilizer production or undergo further processing to transform it into active carbon for filtration systems.

Composting

Get the Most out of Biomass, Down to the Last Straw

Organic waste from domestic trash, municipal landscaping waste: Organic waste products make a good substrate for new greenery or biogas for environmentally friendly heating. NEWeco-tec belt dryers do important groundwork to prepare the organic waste.

Composting Garden Waste

Cuttings from street mowing, grass cuttings from landscaping, garden waste, and raw compost are great raw ingredients for nutrient-rich compost to make the geraniums on your balcony blooming beautiful. Before all of this greenery can make good soil, the moisture has to be removed. Drying improves compostability, plus dried compost can be sieved more easily.

Digesting Organic Waste

The trash from your home organic waste can generate value in biogas production, as can industrial organic waste, primarily from the food processing industry. The waste must first be cleared of plastic, oversize material in filtration, and other extraneous matter that people throw into their organic waste containers. Proper drying of the wet organic waste is key here – it is the prerequisite for sustainable use of organic waste.

CHP Plants

Turning Waste into Warmth

Domestic waste, shredded waste fractions, wood, alternative fuels, bottom ash, and different kinds of sludge are just a few examples of the waste categories that can find a second life as energy sources at CHP plants. NEWeco-tec has the right solutions for fuel drying.
